Date of Travel: December 2012
Two things about Thailand impressed me: the temples in Bangkok and the food! The color, the artwork, the material, and the architecture of the temples gave me a grandeur scene of Thailand in the old days.
And the food. Oh, the food! Maybe it's because I'm an Indonesian therefore I feel that Thai food is kind of similar to all delicious food that I had while growing up. Or maybe Thai people are just so damn talented in cooking that whatever ingredients they dip their hands into turns out as an impressively delicious dish. I'm not sure which one.
Despite the beautiful temple and delicious Thai food, I don't consider Thailand as a destination that's worth a second visit. To me, Bangkok is just another metropolitan city with many shopping malls and skyscrapers, a view that I get to see yearly whenever I go back home to Jakarta. And Phuket didn't do much to help elevate Thailand in my eyes either. Sure the beach was somewhat nice, but after my recent trip to Cancún and Isla Mujeres, where the color of the water and the softness of the sand are second to none, Phuket (along with its surrounding islands and beaches) falls into the category of "just alright".
Did I regret the trip because it was not up to my expectation? Of course not. My motto is, as long as you've never been there, there is always something that you can learn or understand from a country or culture. So, if you've never been to Thailand, hell you should go. But if you ask me if it should be high on your list, my answer is no.
